Oxalic acid is a simple dicarboxylic acid, also known as oxalic acid. It is colorless and transparent crystal at room temperature. It usually contains two molecules of crystal water. When heated to 100.1 ℃, it will lose crystal water and become anhydrous oxalic acid. Toxic, harmful to human body. It is hygroscopic and soluble in ethanol, water, and ether. It is insoluble in benzene and chloroform.

Oxalic acid can form water-soluble complexes with many metals. Because the molecule is directly linked by two carboxyl groups, its acidity is stronger than other binary organic acids, and its acidity is 10000 times as much as that of acetic acid. It has strong reducibility and can be easily oxidized into carbon dioxide and water when it interacts with oxidants. In acid solution, oxalic acid can be quantitatively oxidized by potassium permanganate, so that potassium permanganate solution can be reduced to 2 valent manganese and fade. Oxalic acid with crystal water is easy to purify and is often used in volumetric analysis. At 189.5 ℃, it will decompose into carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and water. Oxalic acid can be decomposed to produce carbon monoxide in laboratory. There is also a small amount of oxalic acid in human urine, calcium oxalate is the main component of urinary calculi.

Storage method of oxalic acid:

Use glass bottles, wooden barrels, multi-layer paper bags or metal barrels to prevent mechanical damage. Store in a cool, ventilated, and dry place and keep it sealed. Use open storage. Keep away from areas where serious fire may occur. Separate from oxidant.

The recommended treatment method of oxalic acid waste is as follows:

Pretreatment includes chemical reaction with limestone or calcium oxide to produce calcium oxalate. After calcination, calcium oxide is collected by particle collection device for reuse.
