1. Introduction of Diethyl phthalate

Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a phthalate ester, namely the diethyl ester of phthalic acid. It is a clear substance that is liquid at room temperature and is only slightly denser than liquid water. It has a faint, disagreeable odor and can be transferred from the plastics that contain it. When burned, DEP produces toxic gases.
Since the compound is a suitable solvent for many organic molecules, it is often used to bind cosmetics and fragrances. Other industrial uses include plasticizers, detergent bases and aerosol sprays. Because of the frequent dermal exposure of humans to the chemical, the question of toxicity is crucial. Several studies suggest that DEP can cause damage to the nervous system as well as to the reproductive organs in males and females.

2. Properties of Dibutyl Phthalate

Operation

Close operation, pay attention to ventilation. Operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by the operating procedures. It is recommended that the operator wear a self-priming filter gas mask (half mask), chemical safety glasses, protective clothing and rubber oil-resistant gloves. Keep away from fire and heat source. No smoking in workplace. Use explosion-proof ventilation systems and equipment. Prevent steam leakage into the workplace air. Avoid contact with oxidants and acids. Handling should be carried lightly to prevent damage to packaging and containers. Equipped with the corresponding variety and quantity of fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. Empty containers may contain hazardous materials.

Storage

Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat source. Should be separated from oxidizer, acid storage, do not mix storage. Equipped with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire equipment. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable storage materials.

Hazardous

Health hazard

Harmful if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through skin. It can irritate skin and eyes. Its vapors or fog can irritate the eyes, mucous membranes and upper respiratory tract. Exposure can cause headache, dizziness and vomiting.

Skin contact: take off contaminated clothing and rinse with plenty of running water.

Eye contact: lift eyelid, rinse with running water or normal saline. Go to a doctor.

Inhalation: Away from site to fresh air. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Go to a doctor.

Eat: drink enough warm water to induce vomiting. Go to a doctor.

Combustion hazard

The product is flammable and irritating.

Danger characteristics: flammable in case of open fire and high heat.

Harmful combustion products: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide.

Fire fighting method: fire fighters should wear gas masks and full-body fire fighting clothes to fight fire upwind. If possible, move containers from the fire to an open area. Spray water to keep the fire container cool until the end of the fire. Containers in the fire must be evacuated immediately if they become discolored or produce sound from the safety relief device.

Fire extinguishing agent: mist water, foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide, sand.

Emergency treatment

Evacuate people from the contaminated area to the safe area, isolate them, and strictly restrict access. Cut off the fire. It is recommended that emergency personnel wear self-contained positive pressure breathing apparatus and protective clothing. Cut off the source of leakage as much as possible. Prevent it from flowing into restricted space such as sewer and flood discharge ditch.

Small leakage: absorbed with dry sand or similar material, or may be washed with an emulsion made of nonflammable dispersant, diluted and placed in the wastewater system.

Large amount of leakage: build embankment or dig pit reception. Transfer by pump to tank car or special collector, recycling or transport to waste treatment site disposal.
