2-ethylhexanol is an organic compound, molecular formula is C8H18O, used in the production of plasticizer, defoamer, dispersant, dressing agent and oil filling agent, also used in printing and dyeing, paint, film and other aspects.

Chemical Name

2-Ethylhexanol

CAS No.

104-76-7

Molecular Formula

8H18O

Molecular Weight

130.22800

EINECS NO.

03-234-3

Stability

Stability. Flammable. Incompatible with strong oxidants and   acids.

Usage

  1. Mainly used for the production of plasticizer, the main products are: dioctyl phthalate (DOP), dioctyl glycolate (DOA), trioctyl triphenyltriate (TOTM), as well as phthalate, azelelic acid, sebacic acid and other binary carboxylic acid ester plasticizer and cold resistant auxiliary plasticizer

  2. This product is an excellent solvent, can be used for paper sizing, latex and photography

  3. Also used in the production of surfactants, dispersants, lubricants, emulsifiers, antioxidants, dressing agents, mercerizing agents and oil additives

  4. It is also used as a permitted flavor in baked goods, frozen dairy products and puddings

Production method

1. Carbonyl synthesis method uses propylene and syngas as raw materials to produce butyraldehyde through carbonylation reaction. Two molecules of butyraldehyde are condensed and dehydrated to obtain 2-ethyl (- 2 -) hexenal, and then hydrogenated to obtain 2-ethyl (- 1 -) hexanol.

2. Acetaldehyde condensation method: butanol aldehyde is synthesized by acetaldehyde condensation, crotonaldehyde is obtained by dehydration, n-butyraldehyde is obtained by hydrogenation, then 2-ethyl (- 2 -) hexenal is obtained by condensation dehydration of two molecules of n-butyraldehyde, and then 2-ethyl (- 1 -) hexanol is obtained by hydrogenation.

3. Rhodium catalyst for heptene process

The one-step carbonylation of heptene to octanol can be catalyzed by rhodium catalyst. Rhodium series catalysts Rh2AcO4 and [RH (NH3) 5Cl]Cl2 can be used as catalyst precursors for the reaction (use to add phosphorus in the catalyst, such as tributyl phosphine to activate the catalyst, so that the main product is normal alcohol, rather than aldehyde).

Storage precautions:

Store in a cool, ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat source. Should be stored separately with oxidizer, acid, etc., do not mix storage. Equipped with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire equipment. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable storage materials
