As the Panama Canal drought begins to improve and supply chains adjust to the ongoing Red Sea crisis, the flow of goods is gradually becoming smoother for U.S. retailers.
At the same time, the back-to-school season and holiday shopping season are approaching, and industry insiders predict that the import volume of goods at major container ports in the United States in the first half of 2024 is expected to return to the right track and achieve year-on-year growth.
Washington - Monthly inbound shipments at major U.S. container ports are expected to remain above 2 million TEU this summer through early fall, a two-year high, according to the Global Port Tracker report from the National Retail Federation (NRF) and Hackett Associates.
The founder of the Hackett Association said: "Despite global geopolitical turmoil, high interest rates and slowing economic growth, we are still seeing a large flow of goods into ports. All three U.S. coastlines are currently seeing a surge in container imports, with the strongest growth in the Gulf of Mexico, followed by the Pacific and East Coast."
The US East Port has also achieved a good start in the first quarter of 2024. The latest data show that the Port of New York and New Jersey, a major port in the East of the United States, handled 701,648 TEUs in March, and the total throughput in the first quarter reached 2,001,449 TEUs, an increase of 12 percent year-on-year.
According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the increase was due to the restart of overseas manufacturing after the Chinese Lunar New Year holiday.
The eastern part of the United States is the main destination for Chinese exports to the United States, accounting for about 70 percent of China's exports to the United States. With the increase in demand, there has been a sharp rise in freight rates, cabin bursting and so on!
